Tribal Broadband and Public Safety
LOCATION
Unalakleet, Alaska
ENVIRONMENT
Remote, off-grid, extreme weather
SOLUTION
Evoltix Vault Power Shelter
The Challenge
The village of Unalakleet, located on Alaska’s western coast approximately 147 miles from Nome, lacked reliable power to support its broadband and land mobile radio infrastructure. Severe storms, extreme cold, and extended outages regularly disrupted service, putting both connectivity and emergency communications at risk.
For Alaska Tribal Broadband, maintaining continuous uptime was critical. The community required a power system capable of operating independently of the grid, withstanding harsh environmental conditions, and delivering reliable backup power without frequent maintenance or fuel logistics challenges.
The solution
Evoltix deployed a pre-configured Vault Power Shelter designed specifically for remote, off-grid operation in extreme climates. The system was delivered ready to deploy and included battery-first architecture to ensure uninterrupted power during outages.
To further enhance performance in cold-weather conditions, the shelter was equipped with upgraded insulation and climate controls. Integrated monitoring and intelligent power management provided visibility into system performance and enabled reliable operation without constant onsite oversight.
Results and impact
- Continuous broadband and land mobile radio service for the entire village
- Reliable emergency backup during extended power outages
- Immediate, uninterrupted operation during severe storms
- Reduced maintenance demands in a hard-to-access location
Why it matters
For remote tribal communities, connectivity is more than convenience, it is a lifeline. This deployment demonstrates how intelligent, rugged power systems can support tribal broadband, emergency response, and community resilience, even in some of the most challenging environments in North America.
During the storm, power was down, but thankfully Evoltix’s integrated Vault Power Shelter was able to immediately power the communications equipment for four days and could have kept running for several weeks.
